Bringing Tastes Of History to life...

School Days | The Victorian School

What will happen in the day?

The Victorian programme is a full day of lessons aimed at recreating a Victorian classroom, with tables and chairs set in rows either in a hall (preferably) or a classroom.  Hosting a Victorian day is a great opportunity for children to come to school in costume.

As ever the emphasis is on having FUN, using artefacts, role-play, and games to teach history in an engaging and meaningful way.

A day in a Victorian school can include some or all of these topics:

o Registration;
o Rules and discipline in the classroom;
o School prayer and religious instruction/assembly;
o Reading, spelling and vocal gymnastics;
o Handwriting practice (with dip pens and ink!);
o
Arithmetic on slates;
o Physical exercises and drill;
o History and geography of the period;
o Observational drawing with toys familiar to Victorian children;
o Punishment (if necessary)
.
